Why invest in tutoring: Bloom's 2 sigma problem
Benjamin Bloom – famous for his taxonomy for educational goals – published an article in which he summarized work from Anania and Burke. Their work compared student learning under three different conditions:
- conventional: learning in a class of about 30 students;
- mastery learning: in simple terms, the same as conventional but with added formative tests to provide feedback on current mastery of the topics; and
- tutoring: a good tutor explains the material 1 on 1 to the student.
Bloom says:
Using the standard deviation (sigma) of the control (conventional) class, it was typically found that the average student under tutoring was about two standard deviations above the average of the control class (the average tutored student was above 98% of the students in the control class).
So, if you want to be 98% better than your untutored peers, get in touch :)
